The demand for Internet bandwidth grows as new applications, new technologies, and increased reliance on the Internet continue to rise. Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) is one technology that allows networks to gain significant amounts of bandwidth to handle this growing need. DWDM Network Designs and Engineering Solutions shows you how to take advantage of the new technology to satisfy your network's bandwidth needs. It begins by providing an understanding of DWDM technology and then goes on to teach the design, implementation, and maintenance of DWDM in a network. You will gain an understanding of how to analyze designs prior to installation to measure the impact that the technology will have on your bandwidth and network efficiency. This book bridges the gap between physical layer and network layer technologies and helps create solutions that build higher capacity and more resilient networks. Companion CD-ROM The companion CD-ROM contains a complimentary 30-day demo from VPIphotonics™ for VPItransmissionMaker™, the leading design and simulation tool for photonic components, subsystems, and DWDM transmission systems. VPItransmissionMaker contains 200 standard demos, including demos from Chapter 10, that show how to simulate and characterize devices, amplifiers, and systems.

Very Interesting book. May 6, 2003 Pecqueur Remi (Sequedin, France) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The only book that I recommand to understand the basic design of optical transmission system. Several books are covering only few aspects of DWDM technology, this one generalize with the just need of what's going on over the fiber and where are the key points of the network. I particularly appretiate the fact that the autors include Q factor and OSNR perspective to design a network. To conclude, this book is well proportional between the physical layer and the rooting issue to get the network smart and efficient. Well done and almost sexy!
Excellence par brilliance!!!! May 12, 2003 Jane Di Jorgan (Alberta Canada) This book is extremely well organized, easy to read and makes understanding optical networking so easy. The good aspect is the design considerations. On the negative side the book is not very liong and I hope there is a second edition. I am offering courses with this book as a tutorial guide and i findit better than contemporary books.
Truly one of its kind! May 16, 2003 DWDM Network Designs and Engineering Solutions is truly one of its kind.It provides very exhaustive and meticulous coverage of all aspects of DWDM technology ranging from the simplest of concepts in Optical Networking to the different intricacies involved in designing cost effective and efficient networks.Authors have explained network designing techniques, expressing various considerations in a simplified manner, which makes understanding far more easier and fun!I highly recommend this book, as an excellent effort explaining in good detail, right from the basics in the optical domain to different ideas, communication techniques and approaches in network design and implementation. A must have!
'The' book for DWDM networks May 22, 2003 Priti (Dallas) This is good book, giving comprehensive details on the DWDM networks. I think its a helpful reference for beginners as well as those in this field for quite some time. Especially the coverage on WDM network design is really good. I hope we get to hear more from the authors!! But for now...this is truely a must-have for this topic!
Best book on Optical Networking September 28, 2003 Vik Jethwani (Boston USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The book is an excellent source of information for network design and product development. It covers all aspects of optical network design. No other book covers this aspect of network design as this one does. Network classificaiton and explanation is very contemporary and cutting edge technologies are shown in the manuscript. The futures section covers technologies that seem most appropriate for real time networks. The simulation software is useful for physical layer design as well as network layer routing and wavelength assignment strategies.... Looking to a second edition hopefully soon..Vik
